The car replaced the TS030 Hybrid to represent Toyota in the 2014 World Endurance Championship. The engine that equipped the TS040 was a 3.7 V8 gasoline aspirated with a power of 520 HP (made by the Motor Sports Unit Development Division) combined with an electric motor that delivered another 480. The car body was developed and designed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH of Cologne. In June 2015 Toyota stopped development of the TS040 to replace it in 2016 with the TS050.
