Initially the X1/9 was only a prototype designed by Bertone; production was then decided, with great interest of car enthusiasts. Sold from 1972, the X1/9 was characterized by its centrally mounted engine. It was the well-known 1290cc 4-cylinder which delivered 75 horsepower. Fiat production stopped in 1982, but in the following years Bertone continued to sell it until 1989. The X1/9 also experienced a sporting use, with Group 3 specimens and also with a special Group 5 preparation edited by Dallara.
