In 1999, McLaren and Mercedes extended their collaboration until 2002. The 1999 car maintained the superiority over the competition that McLaren had shown in 1998. With the MP4 / 14 Mika Hakkinen won the Drivers' World Championship for the second time in a row, taking advantage also of the accident at Silverstone that put Schumacher out of action for 6 Grands Prix. Hakkinen found himself as the main opponent of the other Ferrari driver, Eddie Irvine, but managed to take the title in the last race in Japan. Coulthard was fourth in the league. McLaren finished second among the manufacturers with 124 points, behind Ferrari (128 points).
