For the Sport category, 1953 was an important year because for the first time a real official world championship was established. To meet this challenge, Ferrari decided to update the 340 series as well as the 166 and 250MM, with the introduction of a new version called the 340MM. The car proved to be very competitive, winning the debut race, the Giro di Sicilia with Villoresi/Cassani. An even more significant victory came at the Mille Miglia, with Giannino Marzotto and Marco Crosara. A berlinetta version made its debut at Le Mans, which didn't have much luck. In any case, for the rest of the season Ferrari decided to focus on the 4.5-litre 375MM.
