The 936 was Porsche’s successful Group 6 car of the 70s. Conceived to take part into the new Sportscar Championship from 1976, it proved to be a very strong Le Mans contender, with two overall wins in 1976 and 1977. From 1977 onwards the car had a huge aerodynamic development, resulting in two newly shaped bodyworks (936/78 and 936/79). Porsche seemed no more interested in further developments of the 936, leaving an identical car to Joest Racing for Le Mans 1980 (the car was entered as a 908/80, not to look too “official”). In 1981 Porsche were already developing the 956 Group C but decided to have a go at Le Mans with the older 936. Named the 936/81, is clinched a third overall win, with Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell.
