The Volvo 940 was launched in July 1990, and followed the philosophy of the 740/760 but with slightly softened lines and a few more modern touches. Produced both as a sedan and as a break, the 940 was offered in the GL, GLE and GLT versions. In 1991 the 940 was joined by the 960, which had more powerful engines. The 940, as well as the 960, went out of production in 1997.
