In 1955 Monterey lost its Mercury flagship status. Its place was in fact taken by the Montclair. Suspensions and brakes were improved. A 4.8 L V8 engine was offered in the first series, while a 5.1-liter V8 was added from 1956. Also in 1956 a goblet-shaped steering wheel was introduced, while the safety lock of the doors was included in the standard equipment. The transmissions were always manual three-speed or automatic three-speed ones.
