At the beginning of the fifties, the sports structure of Aston Martin (David Brown Racing) began to lay the foundations for future successes: in 1950 John Wyer was hired as team manager and subsequently the German engineer Robert Eberan von Eberhorst was hired to the technical management. , which had previously collaborated with Ferdinand Porsche on the Auto Union Tipo D and Cisitalia 360 single-seaters. In September 1951, the DB3 made its debut, replacing the DB2. The DB3 did not prove too effective but laid the foundation for the development of the 1953 DB3S and the 1956 DBR1. Five DB3s were sold to sports customers, including two special coupes; the cars of the official team were instead four, plus a road going exemplar used by David Brown. For the 1953 endurance season, the Aston Martin team designed a car capable of ensuring more convincing performance and results than the DB3: thus the DB3S was born, which was ready in May. The DB3S was equipped with a 2.9-liter 6-cylinder engine, capable of delivering 182 horsepower, which later became 225 with the double ignition. The chassis was more compact and rational than that of the DB3. During its career the DB3S underwent several evolutions, such as the front disc brakes. About thirty examples of the DB3S were built, of which a dozen reserved for the official team and the others for private teams from 1954. The car was used until the end of 1958.
