Buick used the name Riviera for the first time in 1949, already for a hardtop coupe. But the Riviera which went into production in 1963 was the only model from the General Motors group to be based on a specific chassis, lightened by 180 kilograms to compete with the Ford Thunderbird. This generation of Riviera remained in production until 1965.
