The high power of the 450S Sport and its general characteristics reinforced Maserati’s ambition for success at Le Mans. To increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the car, it was decided to fit it with a coupé body and on the advice of Stirling Moss was called to work on the project Frank Costin, collaborator of Colin Chapman and future designer of the Vanwalls as well as founder of Cosworth together with Keith Duckworth. The manufacture of the bodywork designed by Costin was entrusted to Zagato. Unfortunately, the short time available greatly affected the efficiency of the car, which with Moss and Schell at the wheel had to retire due to transmission problems.
