The good chassis of the Alfetta GT soon made clear the possibility of installing engines with higher powers than the 4-cylinder 2000 on the car. In 1977 Autodelta decided to test the Montreal V8 engine increased to 3 liters on the GTV. The car, created for use in rallies, then had to be homologated in Group 4, for which a production of 400 copies was required. The appearances of the Alfetta V8 in rallies therefore took place in the prototype category, where the regulations allowed its participation. The Alfetta V8 project was soon abandoned and Alfa Romeo focused exclusively on F1.
