Having lost the Camel sponsorship and Lamborghini engines, the Lotus team faced 1991 in a decidedly downsized set-up. The 102B was designed by Frank Coppuck, while the Judd EV V8 engines were purchased by Brabham. Lotus finished ninth at the end of the championship with just three points, the result of a fifth place by Hakkinen and a sixth by Bailey at Imola.
