For the 2012 WEC season, Audi presented the LMP1 class R18 e-tron quattro. The car represented a significant step forward especially as regards the engine, adopting a hybrid four-wheel drive system, a different concept than the Toyota. The engine was the 3700cc TDI, with sequential 6-speed Xtrac transmission. Previously there was a flywheel energy storage system, made by Hybrid Power, a division of Williams. The energy recovered from this system was applied to the front, thus obtaining an all-wheel drive. The R18 e-tron quattro took yet another victory for Audi at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
