For 2016, Audi completely redesigned the LMP1 class R18, designed around a new chassis. Although the car retained the R18 designation, it was a completely different project than the 2015 car. The aerodynamics had been revised, as well as the hybrid mechanical part, with a new generation battery. The reduction in fuel consumption was impressive: 32% less than the 2011 TDI engine. With the R18, Audi was aiming for a return to victory at Le Mans, which, however, was the prerogative of the Porsche 919 for the second consecutive year.
