The McLaren MP4 / 2 dominated the 1984 F1 season. Designed by the Englishman John Barnard, this car was born in contrast to the Brabham BT52 which in 1983 had allowed Nelson Piquet to clinch his second world title. Barnard, in fact, was not impressed by the winning arrow shape adopted by his rivals, on the innovative aerodynamic conformation of the rear characterized by a bottle-shaped form. Hence the name "Coca-Cola", a solution tested on F102 fighters after the Second World War, designed to reduce turbulence in the tail section. The MP4 / 2 was based on a carbon and kevlar monocoque, which had replaced the traditional aluminum chassis, and was equipped with a 1,500 cm³ V-cylinder 6 turbocharged by two turbochargers, built by Porsche with the funding of TAG, the Mansour Ojeh company, partner of the patron Ron Dennis. This powerful engine, capable of reaching even 800 hp in qualifying, relied on sophisticated power management from highly developed Bosch electronics. In that year, the McLaren MP4 / 2 won a total of 12 races out of the 14, seven with Alain Prost and five with Niki Lauda, who clinched his third and last world title.
