In 1987 the Porsche 911 Turbo completed its range with the Targa and Cabriolet configurations, thus overlapping as a choice of bodywork to the 911 Carrera. For the Carrera, however, Porsche designed a fourth type of set-up, characterized by a low windscreen and a retractable hood completely hidden by a body panel. Thus returned, after a long time, the name Speedster, which evoked the versions of the 356 of the fifties. The Speedster retained the standard 3.2-liter 231 bhp engine of the standard Carrera.
