As with previous open models, BMW teamed up with coachbuilder Baur to add a convertible to the sedan lineup of the late 1960s. The 1600 Cabriolet version was produced from 1967 until June 1971, but between April and June 1971 BMW marketed a more exclusive model, equipped with the 1990cc M05 engine. The first batch of 200 cars had no roll bar. In July 1971, production resumed with a configuration that included a rollbar and that took up the updates introduced on the sedan. Of this second version, produced until 1975, 2317 units were built.
