The death of Piers Courage, due to the accident in the Dutch Grand Prix in 1970 while he was behind the wheel of a De Tomaso 505/38 deployed by the Frank Williams team, decreed the end of the Modena Formula 1 program. Based on a monocoque in light aluminum alloy with magnesium reinforcements, this single-seater with rather generous dimensions (2,400 mm wheelbase, with a front track of 1,470 mm and rear of 1,580 mm) and with a definitely high weight of 570 kg, it was designed by Gian Paolo Dallara. Equipped with a Ford Cosworth DFV longitudinal rear engine, 8 cylinders at V90 ° of 2.993 cm³, capable of developing a power of 450 hp at 10,800 rpm, it had a 5-speed Hewland sequential manual gearbox plus reverse. To drive it were also Brian Redman and Tim Schenken.
