Presented at the end of 1989, the Land Rover Discovery was characterized by a very particular line, with the two-level roof which guaranteed considerable space and practicality of use. The Discovery inaugurated a great mechanical novelty, the 2.5-litre 200Tdi four-cylinder in-line diesel engine. Developed under the name Gemini, it was of a more modern conception than the previous 2.5 Tdi. Power went from 85 to 111hp and torque from 203 to 264 Nm. The 3.5-litre V8 petrol engine was also present in the Discovery catalogue. In 1993 this unit was replaced by a 3.9-litre engine and – in certain markets – by a 2-litre MPI inline four-cylinder petrol engine. Production of the Discovery I ceased in 1994.
