The first "small" Citroën to break away from the Dyane era, the AX was introduced in 1986. Nothing revolutionary, the car was however very frugal and inexpensive to maintain. It was a good sales success in a dozen years of production, being fitted with engines from 954 to 1527cc; there was no lack of sporting versions. The AX was produced in over 2.5 million exemplars until 1998.
