After the end of the official Audi activity in rallies in 1987, the activity continued in the preparation of cars for private customers in Group A and Group N. In 1989 the 90 Quattro was approved in Group A, equipped with a 5-cylinder in-line engine from 2309cc (197 horsepower at 6500 rpm) and five-speed transmission. The 90 Quattro achieved numerous successes in national and international rallies, before being replaced by the S2 Coupé, homologated in 1993.
