Unlike the other group B rally cars, the RS200 was also designed to be a road car that is sufficiently comfortable and compatible with the normal Ford service network. It was designed by Tony Southgate and had a centrally mounted Cosworth BDT RS1700T engine. In the road versions the power reached 250 horsepower, while in racing cars the maximum value, reached at the end of 1986 in the official cars, was 450 horsepower. Brian Hart later developed a 2.1-liter version of the engine, capable of developing up to 650 horsepower, for the rallycross category.
