For the 1963 F1 season Tony Rudd, designer of BRM, had studied a new car, the P61, to counter the competition of the Lotus 25. The P61, however, proved not very competitive, and the team was forced to brush up on the P57 of the year before, which received the new six-speed gearbox. With the P57, Graham Hill won in Monte Carlo and in the United States, finishing second in the drivers' championship, tied with team mate Richie Ginther, second and third on several occasions. BRM finished second in the constructors' championship behind Lotus.
