In 1978, to stop the overwhelming supremacy of the Lotus, Brabham dusted off an old idea of Jim Hall, co-founder and owner of Chaparral, dating back to the beginning of the same decade and used in the Can-Am championship. That is, to apply a suction fan to the rear of the car, moved by a series of gears driven by the main shaft of the gearbox, in order to create a depression under the car itself. This solution was taken up by the South African designer Gordon Murray and used in the Swedish Grand Prix only. The result was extraordinary and translated into the victory of Niki Lauda, who brought the Alfa Romeo BT46 powered to success. However, after the Anderstorp race, the International Sports Commission banned it. Both for the turbulences created that gave not a few problems to the cars that followed, as for the raised dust. Yet that single-seater remained in the history of Formula 1 and with the same Austrian driver he achieved another success in Monza, almost three months later, in a tragic edition of the Italian Grand Prix which cost Ronnie Peterson's life. These two victories were the only ones for Brabham-Alfa Romeo; a partnership, the one between the two brands, which lasted from 1976 to 1979. The BT46 was equipped with a 2,994 cm3 12-cylinder boxer engine with a power of 540 hp, designed by the Tuscan engineer Carlo Chiti. The chassis was a monocoque aluminum type, with a wheelbase of 2,590 mm and a weight that was around 600 kg. The gearbox used was a five-speed manual.
