The first generation of the Celica was introduced in 1970 and remained in production until 1977. Probably not even Toyota could predict the huge success that this coupe would have in the years to come. The Celica was available with two engine versions (1.6 and 2.0), both with 4 cylinders, more sporty versions, called GT being produced. The bodywork line was a mix between Japanese taste and some concessions to American styles, so much so that the car earned the nickname "Japanese Mustang". In 1977 the first generation gave way to the Mk.II, with more angular and more "European" lines. The Celica first version, as well as many other Celica series, had a competition career, in rallies but also on the track, with an incredible group 5 configuration prepared by the German trainer Schnitzer.
