Le Mans 2006: after the successes with the R8, Audi bet everything on turbodiesel. The new car from Ingolstadt, called the R10 TDi, was the star of the race, despite the unknown factor linked to the technological innovation of the engine. But the competition did not manage to fight the R10 and the number 8 car from Biela, Pirro and Werner won the race covering 380 laps, four more than the Pescarolo of Hélary / Montagny / Loeb. Capello / Kristensen / McNish completed Audi’s success coming third overall and setting the fastest lap. Presented in Paris the previous year, the R10 TDi had started the 2006 season well by winning the 12 Hours of Sebring. The technological challenge was to impose itself on Le Mans. With its 650 horsepower V12, the R10 proved immediately robust and reliable, capable of handling a 24-hour race without problems.
