While the 1968 McLaren M7A was also heavily used in 1969 (Hulme drove it all season, winning in Mexico), the team also worked on advanced versions, such as the M7B, which had widened track and side-mounted gas tanks. The car, a one-off, was driven by Bruce McLaren in South Africa, obtaining a fifth place. Later it was sold to Antique Automobiles, the team of Colin Crabbe, hiring Vic Elford, who pedalled it in 1969 at the GPs of Holland, France, Great Britain and Germany, clinching a fifth place in France as best result.
