The 1985 Ferrari F1 marked a decisive turning point: Mauro Forghieri had left the management of the design office of the Maranello racing department, and the new F1 had been designed by the Englishman Harvey Postlethwaite. The car was equipped with a 1500cc 6-cylinder turbo engine that developed 780 horsepower. Over the course of the season, Michele Alboreto seemed able to counter Alain Prost with McLaren, but in the final part of the championship, the Milanese driver was heavily penalized by the lack of reliability. He scored two victories, in Canada and in Germany.
